How to Choose a Cat Name

Y You have got a cat! It is an awesome event and even you may don’t know how to name this lovely creature, you already love him or her to the bottom of your heart or at least you are eager to give that fluffy kid (or may be not that fluffy) your love and care.

Your new cat is very active or calm. A white or black, or may be tabby. May be with bright green eyes. Or yellow. Or blue. Or may be eyes are of different colours!

Without doubt your new cat is beautiful. The cat may be majestic looking, of a famous breed, or may be a gorgeous domestic. It will have its own personality for sure. There will be no other cat like this one.

How would you name your cat? What do you consider? What helps to find a proper name?

Choosing a Cat Name: My Story

When we adopted our cat I had the same question in front of me. I knew his previous name, but it did not sound right. What I did was letting some time to pass. While he was “noname”, I observed his behaviour. I touched, patted, and played with him. I looked how he behaves with other cats and people. I watched how he eats, walks, and speaks.

But I could not find a name for him! Nothing came to my mind. Then I decided to open a page with all cat names. I went through the list and spoke each name out trying to imagine my cat called by that name. It took me some time to limit my options, but I already had an understanding how my new cat behaves, I knew his personality a bit.

After some time I found a couple of names that sounded more or less right. At that time I had to ring a vet clinic to book an appointment for a vet check for my new cat. They needed a name. I picked one of the selected favourites.

Half a year passed. I can say for sure that the cat name fits my cat very well! Yes, it is him behind that name. I just can’t imagine another cat name for him. Toby – cheerful, playful, wonderful!

Cat Names Ideas

What are other ideas around choosing a cat name?
People suggest naming a cat after something you really like. For example after:

  • Food (Ginger, Cookie, Pumperknickle, Marshmellow)
  • Person (Alexander, Einstein, Glen, Lincoln, Marley)
  • Nature (Dawn, Maple, Willow)
  • Literature (Gatspy, Hamlet)
  • A cool word from some language. For example a color (Use French, Greek, Spanish, Russian, German, or any other language where it sounds nice)
  • Famous cat (Simba, Sher-kan, Tigger, Moofasa)
  • Place or site (Eiffel, Paris, Rushmore, Sydney)

How did you find a name for your cat? Was it difficult?
Have you ever had to give your cat another name after it was called already?
